Idle fees, the charge that kicks in when you leave your EV plugged into a public charger after it stops pulling power, catch a lot of first-time public chargers off guard. Tesla charges up to $1.00 per minute at busy Superchargers after a 5-minute grace period. Electrify America charges $0.40 per minute after 10 minutes. You plug in, walk into the store, and lose track of time. Twenty minutes later your car finished charging fifteen minutes ago, it is still sitting in the stall, and a text just landed telling you idle fees are running. At a busy Tesla Supercharger, that fifteen minutes just cost you as much as $15. This is not a rare mistake. It is the single most common way first-time public charging users get an unpleasant surprise, and the rules differ enough by network that "just don't overstay" is not specific enough advice to actually follow.

What an idle fee is, in plain terms

An idle fee is a per-minute charge that starts once your car stops actively charging but stays plugged in. Networks bill it separately from the electricity itself, and the logic is simple: a stall you are not using is a stall someone else cannot use. The fee is designed to hurt enough that you move your car promptly, not to generate meaningful revenue on its own.

The trap is that "stops actively charging" is not always obvious from inside the car. Charging tapers dramatically once a battery passes roughly 80%, so a session that shows "still charging" on your dash can be adding only a trickle of range while the clock the network cares about has already started.

What each major network actually charges

Idle fee policy is not standardized across networks, and it is not always even standardized within one network. Here is what each one does as of August 2026.

The pattern worth noticing: the two big highway networks, Tesla and Electrify America, have a real, predictable, published rate. The others push the decision down to whoever owns the specific charger, which means the honest answer to "what will I be charged if I overstay at this EVgo station" is "open the app and look," not a number this article or any other can promise you in advance.

Tesla's occupancy-based structure is the one most drivers get wrong. Because the fee only kicks in once a station is at least half full, you can genuinely sit at an empty Supercharger for as long as you want with no idle charge at all. The mistake is assuming that logic carries over to every network. It does not; Electrify America's $0.40 per minute applies on a flat 10-minute clock regardless of how busy the station is.

The unwritten etiquette that avoids most of this

Formal fees are only half the picture. Public charging etiquette exists because a charging bay is shared infrastructure with no attendant enforcing manners, and a handful of habits keep the system working for everyone, including you the next time you are the one waiting.

  • Move at 80 to 90%, not 100%, when others are waiting. DC fast charging slows sharply past roughly 80% state of charge to protect the battery, so the last 10 to 20% can take longer than the first 80% combined. If a line is forming, topping off the last stretch elsewhere is the considerate move, and it is also the move that keeps you off the idle-fee clock.
  • Never unplug someone else's car. Even if it looks finished, that is not your call to make without permission. Some drivers leave a note or a hanging tag with a phone number authorizing others to unplug if they are running late; absent that, leave it alone unless it is a genuine emergency.
  • A charging stall is not a parking space. Once your session ends, the spot belongs to the next person, not to the rest of your shopping trip. This is the exact behavior idle fees exist to discourage.
  • Set a phone alarm or use the network's notification. Tesla, Electrify America, and most apps will text or push a notification when your session completes. Turning that on is the single easiest way to never pay an idle fee by accident.
  • Check the station's specific policy before you plug in, especially on EVgo, ChargePoint, or Blink. Because those networks do not guarantee one company-wide rate, the app screen you see right before starting a session is the only reliable source for what overstaying will actually cost at that stall.

Idle fees are not designed to punish normal charging, they are designed to punish the last twenty minutes of dead time after you have already gotten what you came for. Know your network: Tesla's rate depends on how busy the station is, Electrify America's does not, and EVgo, ChargePoint, and Blink all leave it to the individual station, so check the app. Combine that with the basic courtesy of moving once you are done rather than once you notice, and idle fees stop being a real risk and become exactly what they are meant to be: a rule you never actually encounter.
