Tesla Just Let Cybertruck and Powerwall Back Up a Home Together

On September 10, 2026, Tesla enabled Cybertruck Powershare to work alongside a home Powerwall 3 during an outage, ending a restriction that had forced owners to pick one backup source or the other since Powershare launched in late 2023. For three years, owning both a Tesla Cybertruck and a home Powerwall meant the two could not back each other up. Powershare, the Cybertruck's vehicle-to-home feature, would run a house during an outage, but only if that house had no Powerwall installed. A home with a Powerwall already had to rely on the Powerwall alone. On September 10, 2026, Tesla closed that gap: Cybertruck Powershare now works alongside a Powerwall 3, and Tesla says the pairing extends a home's backup runtime by more than three days, equivalent to roughly nine additional Powerwalls of capacity.

What actually changed

Before this update, Powershare Home Backup and a home Powerwall were mutually exclusive. If your house had a Powerwall, plugging in a Cybertruck for backup power was not an option; you used one system or the other. That limitation is gone for Powerwall 3 owners as of this month. Now the Powerwall discharges first, running the house the way it always has, and once it needs support the Cybertruck's battery kicks in as reserve capacity, even topping the Powerwall back up while the grid is still down.

The math behind Tesla's "over three days" claim holds up: the dual-motor and Cyberbeast Cybertruck's usable pack is about 123 kWh, and a Powerwall 3 holds 13.5 kWh, so 123 divided by 13.5 lands almost exactly on the "nine additional Powerwalls" figure Tesla is citing. Applied against the roughly 30 kWh a typical U.S. household uses in a day, a mostly full Cybertruck battery plausibly buys several extra days of runtime on top of whatever the Powerwall alone provides, which is the three-day figure Tesla and multiple outlets reported this week.

One number matters more than the headline, though: the combined system still caps total output at up to 11.5 kW, in line with the continuous output Cybertruck Powershare has offered since launch. The Cybertruck does not add extra simultaneous power on top of the Powerwall; it adds hours and days of runtime once the Powerwall's own reserve starts running low. If your air conditioner and refrigerator already push close to that ceiling at once, adding the truck will not let you run more at the same time. It will let you keep running what you already can for a lot longer.

That is close to two years past the original expectation and a few months past the most recent promised date. Tesla has a track record on this specific feature of announcing dates it then misses, which is worth keeping in mind for the next milestone below.

Who this affects and what to do now

If you already own a Cybertruck and a Powerwall 3, watch for an email from Tesla. Several owners have reported getting a survey to fill out before the feature activates on their system, so it is not necessarily instant for everyone with the qualifying hardware. If you already have a Powerwall and a Wall Connector installed, Tesla's own support documentation says no additional equipment is needed to get Powershare Home Backup working, only the software-side enablement.

If you have a Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+ instead of a Powerwall 3, this update does not apply to you yet. Tesla says support is coming "later this year," but given that the same promise has already slipped from 2025 to mid-2026 to now "later in 2026," treat that date as soft until Tesla actually ships it.

If you are deciding whether to add a Cybertruck, a Powerwall, or both for backup power, this removes a real reason to have hesitated: previously, buying a Powerwall for backup and a Cybertruck for other reasons meant the two systems worked around each other rather than together. That case is now stronger, particularly if you live somewhere with frequent multi-day outages. It does not change the underlying tradeoff we laid out in our guide to bidirectional charging: if backup is your only goal and you have no other reason to buy an EV, a standalone home battery is still simpler and does not tie up your vehicle.

If you do not own a Cybertruck, Powershare Home Backup remains a Cybertruck-exclusive feature within Tesla's own lineup. The Model Y Performance can run individual appliances through an adapter (vehicle-to-load), but that is a different, much smaller capability than this panel-integrated home backup, and no other current Tesla model offers either. What it costs to set up from scratch

For a home with no existing Powershare hardware, a full setup needs three things beyond the truck itself: a Universal Wall Connector, a Powershare Gateway, and a backup switch that safely disconnects the house from the grid during an outage. We priced this same hardware stack in our bidirectional charging guide at roughly $3,500 before installation, the lowest-cost factory V2H option of the systems we tracked, with all-in installed cost for a V2H setup (Tesla or otherwise) commonly landing between $3,500 and $15,000 depending on the vehicle, existing wiring, and how much panel work is involved. Homes that already have both a Powerwall and a Wall Connector installed do not need to buy anything new for this specific update; it is an over-the-air software change on top of hardware many owners already have.

The honest caveats

Tesla's "more than three days" figure is its own estimate based on average household electricity use, not a guarantee for every home. A house with a large central air conditioner running through a hot outage will burn through both the Powerwall and the Cybertruck's reserve faster than a smaller, better-insulated home. The exact runtime also depends on how charged the truck is when the outage starts, since a Cybertruck that is already low on battery from recent driving has far less to contribute.

The rollout itself is also not complete. Powerwall 3 owners are being enabled through what looks like a staged, survey-gated process rather than a single flip-of-a-switch update to everyone at once, and Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ owners have no firm date at all.
